Dr. Blake in Mexico.
Quotes for the month.
"You can't be liberated in your thinking if you're conservative in your approach."

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
- Mahatma Gandhi
I finally got some time to work on last month's newsletter and bring you guys up to speed on what is going on with the Pet Whisperer. First of all I want to assure you I will be sharing the Fifth Commandment according to Saint Dog with you all later in this newsletter. The first order of business is to inform you all that Dr. Blake and Mrs. Dr Blake (Charene) are doing better and that our insurance company CSE www.cse-insurance.com has been wonderful in getting us back on our feet. As a matter of fact it has been the best insurance company that I have heard of in helping firestorm victims get their claims settled. Our feeling is they will set the standard for how all insurance companies should treat their clients like you and me in the future to come. We will start the construction of our home the end of this month and pray it gets built as soon as possible, so we can return home. My plan is to set up a tent like the one you see me in above and camp out at the building site so I can get back home quicker. Charene is not as much in a hurry as I am and has made it clear she not going to sleep in a tent but would rather wait until we have a real bed. Who Know what pee mail is?
For all you Saint Dog caregivers the answer should be obvious. When a dog goes on his daily adventure into the world of smells, the first thing he does is check his pee mail box. As we all know that is every thing he can lift his leg on or squat on, moving or not ;O)
The amount of information they gather is probably infinite. Just to give you and idea how sensitive this sensory device is, did you know they can smell cancer cells? That's correct, some dogs can actually smell cancer cells on a person or in a vial.
Dogs have 40 times the number of scent-receiving cells in their noses than humans have, making them able to sense the most minute scents given off by tumor.
Shing Ling's is a dog whose trainer commands the her to tell him which sample of tissue smells like cancer. When the dog chooses which one she thinks has the cancer scent, she taps it with her pa. After a year and a half of perfecting the training methods, Shing Ling is right 87 percent of the time.
Here is a link about how dogs detect tumors and predict seizures Animals and Your Health (Part 1): Dogs as Disease Detectors . I have been blessed with having a patient named Sadie, a Dingo mix, who is a seizure detector and because of her great gift allows her Mom to be able to do things she would not be able to do without her. Her ability to sense the impending aora, allows her caregiver to stop her car or sit down so that she is not injured. Sadie never fails to amaze me with her gifts and her dedication to her Mom. She is truly a great example of Saint Dog in action.
The Horse Whisperer!
I have been reading The Man Who Listens To Horses which is an autobiography written by Monty Roberts the Horse Whisperer. This is a must read for any horse lovers but for any one who wants to learn about communicating with animals by watching their body movements.
As you may or may not know I got my tag The Pet Whisperer from a dear friend who originally called me The Cat Whisperer many years ago. Her reasoning was that I must be whispering and hearing the whispering of her cat Plato. The reason was that I picked up subtle hints that she felt I could only have gotten from listening to her dear friend. Since I work with all species I decided that to be fair to all the critters, I would use The Pet Whisperer. All of this is explained in my book The Pet Whisperer which you can order off my website www.thepetwhisperer.com.
In the book Monty tells a story of discovery about his beloved friends the wild mustangs, who were his greatest teachers of Equus the language of horses. The main point I got from his book was being sensitive to the animals feelings and listening to them. All of these observations he has made about horses, is what I have noted about dogs and cats. There is a universal language among all animals, that we all need to listen for and that is unconditional love.
He uses the phrase "join-up" in his book and simply put, it is the point when the horse fully trusts the rider and allows him be one with him. This the same thing I have been teaching people for years with their cats and dogs when I allow them time to get to trust me before I begin their care. My feeling is that we owe them an introduction, a welcome, a treat and some time for us to listen to them as well as time for them to listen to us. By practicing this etiquette, 99% of the time the dog or cat will come over to me and allow me to acupuncture, adjust or treat it with no resistance. The trust must be earned before the animal will avail itself to our care.
Recently I had the good fortune of meeting Queensland Healer named Jake. He was a new patient of mine in for chronic allergies. Upon his arrival he nearly had to be dragged into my home office to be seen due to some fear he carried with him. His Dad and Mom were along to help me figure what was wrong with their boy.
His was a structural engineer and very scientific but open to alternative medicine. As always I began the visit with introduction and greeting to my patient Jake. Jake was a bit unsure of who this new individual was but he was sure I was a veterinarian and kept his distance. The old cheese treat helped a bit but he still stuck close to his Dad.
When I asked his Dad about his temperament, he replied "Since you are the Pet Whisperer you tell me!" It was a gentle challenge to what I was about and I told him I would do my best. As the case unfolded I realized there were old issues Jake had brought to his new home when he was adopted and that men were an issue for him.
A few doses of Rescue remedy and one dose of Aconite 10m and he shifted his position in the room to behind his Dad to between his Dad and me. Finally I figured our his Homeopathic Simillimum and gave it to him is some cheese. With in a few minutes he came up to me and took cheese from my hand and then placed his paws on me and took a piece up close and personal. His Dad looked very surprised and said nothing for a few minutes. Finally he could not contain himself any longer and told me the real story about Jake.
Ever since he was a very young dog, he would only greet men if they would lay on the ground and let him sniff them before letting them get up and pet him. This was a first in all the time they had owned him. He then smiled and said "You are the pet whisperer!" It made me smile, just like Monty Roberts must smile when he a join-up takes place with his horses.
It is the listening and being sensitive to their emotions as well as using the flower essences, aromatherapy or homeopathy to help with this letting go and obtaining "join-up" AKA "trust." This is goal of any treatment program or training is to gain the trust so that they will be part of the process instead of stress of the process. Keep this in mind when you are caring for your animals. A blend of essential oils I have found to really help with this process is Release by Young Living Essential oils, which you can learn more about on my website www.thepetwhisperer.com under essential oils.
The Fifth Commandment According to Saint Dog.
The only thing of value in this life to give is our time.
If you were to sit Saint Dog and ask him this simple question "What is the most important thing we can do for each other?" Without hesitation he would reply Daaaaaaaaaaa...share your time because that is what LOVE is!
In the words of immortal Saint Dog, WORDS ARE CHEAP! If you want to walk the walk of love, get off your behind and spend some time with those you love. When was the last time your dog said "I am too busy to go on a walk, lick your face, play ball, go for a ride, sleep in bed with you, wag his tail or just lay his head on your lap?
If he could pick up a cell phone I am sure he would take the time to give you call when he is away or if he hadn't seen you for a while. If he was on his lap top, he surely would greet you when you came into the room. He would take you out to dinner if he felt like it and had his credit card handy and someone to drive him to the his favorite eatery. If he knew you needed someone to watch the kids he would be there for you and not complain or expect anything in return but your love.
These are but a few of the things that Saint Dog would do if he walked in the shoes of his caregivers and all he asks is that we do the same. Take time to share your time with those you care about and remember "The only thing of value you have to give in this life is your time."
Make today a great day and please pay it forward.
OAO, Dr Blake
