DANGER ZONE!  DO NOT IGNORE SAMBA’S WARNING!  Mr. Samba has a message, and he’s asked Dr. Blake to inform all of his readers about the danger facing all of the animals and people on this planet. The threat sounds so pretty when the ad playing on your television is surrounded by peaceful music to help drown out the warnings about allergic reactions and, oh yeah, possible death.  What is this threat?  It’s right there in the topical flea and tick products that are being used on millions of animals every year. These chemicals are carcinogens and neurotoxins which are being absorbed into the skin of animals and people.  We’re killing ourselves and our planet, all in the name of greed.

SAFE ALTERNATIVES TO DEADLY FLEA AND TICK MEDICATIONS


More than 1,200 pet deaths and 44,000 severe reactions -- a monumental increase of 53% - took place in 2008, as a result of spot-on flea and tick preparations, according to a report released by the Center for Public Integrity and reported on ABC-TV World News on May 28, 2009. The Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to the production of “original, responsible, investigative journalism on issues of public concern,” alarmed by the reports it was receiving, pushed the government to release the numbers.

It is estimated that 100 million doses of these potentially life-threatening products are rubbed into the fur of cats and dogs each year, a number that has San Diego veterinarian Dr. Stephen Blake more than a little alarmed. “The directions on these products say to ‘wear gloves’ when applying,” said Dr. Blake, “but every time you touch your pet from that point forward you come into contact with these toxic chemicals,” he continued. “They are not safe for our us and they are definitely not safe for our animals.”

Dr. Blake has first-hand experience with the dangers of such preparations. In 1980, after 10 years of using flea and tick  preparations on his clients, he became so seriously ill that he had to make a life-changing decision: Either find a more natural way to treat animals or stop practicing medicine altogether. He chose the natural approach.  Since that time, Dr. Blake requires from all his patients the agreement that they absolutely will not use these potentially deadly products. “It is most important, especially when you have an ailing pet, to get their immune system into top shape. You don't stand a chance when you are ‘treating’ your animal with toxic substances,” he said.

Instead of potentially lethal chemicals, Dr. Blake suggests the following approaches to ward off fleas and mosquitoes: “I like to use an Essential Oil blend consisting of one drop each of Lemon, Lemongrass, and R.C. (A Young Living Essential Oils blend of four varieties of the Eucalyptus species,) Pine, Lavender, Cypress, Spruce, Myrtle, Marjoram and Peppermint in one ounce of spring water in a sprayer bottle. Spray this combination on dry dogs and cats each time they go outside or into an infested area. For ticks, Dr. Blake favors one drop each of Lavender, Lemon Grass, Sage and Thyme mixed into one ounce of spring water and sprayed onto pets every day during tick season.  Other natural remedies used successfully by his patients include mixing a spoonful of apple cider vinegar into the pet’s drinking water, feeding garlic capsules mixed in with their food, and using Flea Treats (Fleatreats.com) a combination of brewer’s yeast and B Vitamins.

Lets all get off our rear ends and do something about this.. Does anyone know Oprah..? She has a full page ad on page 148 of “O” Magazine for Frontline.  Oprah always has good intentions, and I’m sure in this case she believes she is helping ward off parasites.  We’re all ignorant about important facts until someone educates us and shows us a different point of view.  Here is an opportunity for someone….. Catherine wrote: "Once again, Intervet is staging a ‘National Vaccination Month.’ This is a repeat of last year’s marketing campaign, in which pet parents were encouraged to take their dogs, cats and rabbits in for a complete starter series if they have lapsed by eighteen months. The hook is the full course for the price of a booster. Vets are encouraged to participate in local newspaper PR/advertising, supported by Intervet’s marketing team. It also seems that Intervet is pushing annual shots in America, so once I've investigated this, it could become an international media release."

It’s going to be ONE letter with everyone’s name and title listed at the signature point. We just need to know the names of people willing to sign, and their credentials (DVM, Ph.D., CVA, etc.) and/or organization and memberships: AHVMA, AVMA, etc.

We are writing in connection with a current marketing campaign by Intervet, a veterinary vaccine manufacturer. The campaign – National Vaccination Month – seeks to promote the annual vaccination of dogs, cats and rabbits, and offers a full initial course (for example, for dogs, the full puppy series) for animals who have lapsed in their annual shots by 18 months or over. The campaign is to run throughout June.

Annual Vaccination is Scientifically Unsupportable

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association have announced publicly that annual vaccination is neither necessary nor without harm. These pronouncements are based upon the known and current science, namely that dogs and cats, once immune to viral disease, are immune for years or life. No added protection is conferred by re-vaccination. These statements are themselves supported by scientific duration of immunity studies.

Our government, through the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and the Veterinary Products Committee, has allowed veterinary vaccine manufacturers to hide behind licenses that require only minimum duration of immunity studies. Thus, for years, the manufacturers have been facilitated to sell unnecessary and potentially harmful annual boosters simply because annual boosters haven't been tested for longer by manufacturers. Latterly, a few of the veterinary vaccine manufacturers have licensed their products for three years – but even this is an arguable practice. Intervet itself, which is seeking to sell annual vaccines through its marketing campaign, also has vaccines that are licensed for three years. On this basis alone, it is hard to understand how Intervet justifies annual boosters for dogs, or how the campaign can be legally acceptable.

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) have all publicly supported the duration of immunity studies which show that ‘once a dog is immune to viral disease, he is immune for years or life’. We must point out that these veterinary associations, by publicly announcing that annual vaccination is unnecessary, are potentially significantly reducing the booster income of their members, and so they would not make these pronouncements lightly.

These organizations recommend that “vaccines should not be given needlessly”.

The WSAVA guidelines recommend: “We should aim to vaccinate every animal, and to vaccinate each individual less frequently.” These international guidelines also recommend that, “we should aim to reduce the ‘vaccine load’ on individual animals in order to minimize the potential for adverse reactions to vaccine products”.

The WSAVA guidelines advise that dogs properly vaccinated with MLV core CDV, CPV-2 and CAV-2 vaccines “would have ™98% protection from disease. Similarly we would expect a very high protection from infection”. They recommend that dogs should not be vaccinated more frequently than every three years, but that immunity to viral disease lasts for at least seven years, but probably for life. This is based on direct challenge studies, and on serology.

It should be noted that a small percentage of the dog population, notably amongst the black and tan breeds, are unable to acquire immunity, whether or not they are vaccinated. Neither does it matter how many times you vaccinate these dogs – they just don't acquire immunity.

The WSAVA guidelines also define non-core vaccines, which are “those that are required by only those animals whose geographical location, local environment or lifestyle places them at risk of contracting specific infections. For example, dogs boarded at kennels may need additional vaccination for kennel cough. However, given the possibility of adverse reaction to vaccination, pet owners should consult with their veterinarian to assess risk-benefit ratios, and consider very carefully if their pet actually needs any non-core vaccines.”

According to the Fact Sheets for the WSAVA Dog and Cat Vaccination Guidelines (which are built on the AAHA canine guidelines and the AAFP feline guidelines), duration of immunity after vaccination with MLV core vaccines is 7 years or longer, based on challenge and serological studies, for Canine Parvo virus Type 2 (CPV-2), Canine Adenovirus (CAV-2) and Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) vaccines.

The WSAVA guidelines also note: “Most vaccinated dogs will have a persistence of serum antibody (against core vaccine antigens) for many years. Immunologically, this antibody reflects the function of a distinct population of long-lived plasma cells (memory effector B cells). Induction of immunological memory is the primary objective of vaccination. For core vaccines there is excellent correlation between the presence of antibody and protective immunity and there is long DOI (duration of immunity) for these products.”

Dr Ronald D Schultz, head of pathobiology at Wisconsin University, and the man behind the DOI studies, has stated that, in his view, dogs can be considered safe if vaccinated as puppies and then once after the age of six months of age, at which time their immune systems are mature. They need not be vaccinated again. Dr Schultz does not support the use of the Leptospirosis vaccine, as it is known to be ineffective and comes with the most severe adverse reactions.

So, clearly, there is absolutely no scientific justification for any marketing campaigns by vaccine manufacturers to promote annual shots, as Intervet is doing currently. And there is no scientific justification for DEFRA, or our government, or even the British veterinary bodies, to hide behind industry claims of efficacy and safety, whilst supporting the unnecessary medical procedure of annual, or even tri-annual, vaccination.

Apart from asking dog (and cat) owners to spend their money unnecessarily, they are frequently then required to spend even more money dealing with the after-effects of unnecessary vaccinations. Money, of course, is not the main point: human beings are making dogs ill, and promoting early death.

Vaccine damage to dogs

We attach an article which summarizes some of the scientific references to what we say next.

Vaccines are known to cause vaccinated dogs (but not non-vaccinated dogs) to develop auto antibodies to their own DNA (Larry Glickman et al, Purdue University). This means that vaccines cause dogs to attack their own genetic blueprint. Each time we vaccinate, we risk introducing further genetic defects into dogs, which are passed down the line.

Another example is that vaccines are known to cause T cell immunodeficiencies, which are inheritable and associated with heart disease. Combine T cell immunodeficiencies with B cell immunodeficiencies (which are also inheritable), then you have dogs which are predisposed to respond to vaccines with inflammatory/allergic and immune-mediated conditions like dermatitis, arthritis, epilepsy, brain damage, digestive problems, and cancer.

It is well known by the veterinary profession that cats are prone to vaccine-site sarcomas, but few vets seem to be aware of the research which shows that dogs also develop vaccine site sarcomas. Ferrets do, too.

Vaccines are also known, and accepted, to cause encephalitis – inflammation of the brain. Encephalitis is a spectrum disease. It can be mild and invisible, all the way through to brain damage and death. It is a symptom of, or a word used to describe, the inflammation that is a known sequel to vaccination. Epilepsy is also a symptom of encephalitis, and around one in every hundred dogs in the UK is epileptic.

Other studies show that vaccines can cause arthritis; others that vaccines can cause diabetes; others that vaccines can cause autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Paresis (paralysis of one or more limbs) is a sequel to encephalitis, which is an acknowledged vaccine reaction.

Therefore, on two counts, annual vaccination is not something that should be promoted and encouraged. It is financially unjustifiable, and it is potentially harmful to the animals who are needlessly vaccinated.

 What is Dr. Christian up to now?

Now that Dr. Christian is completing his year of kindergarten, he would like to share what he has learned over the past year about chemicals and your pets. One of his clients wrote the following after having a consultation with Dr. Blake and him.

I recently came to see you for a more “holistic” and “natural” approach for treating my pets medical conditions. During that first meeting I shared with you the recent experience that I had that led me to do some research related to the ingredients and side effects of the flea/tick control that we use on our pets. I have attached the information to this e-mail. Please feel free to include it in your news letter so that we can inform as many pet owners as possible. Everyone needs to know that these companies are killing our pets and possibly us, their owners.

The reason for my research started when a very good friend of mine, Dan, went into liver failure acutely. His liver biopsy showed an inflammatory response due to an unknown chemical and/or medication. His wife and I were brain storming trying to identify anything that he had been newly exposed to. The only thing that could be identified was that Dan had recently applied “Frontline Plus” to both of his dogs for flea/tick control. FYI, I had to quit using Frontline on one of my dogs about 6 months ago because it was causing her severe lethargy and vomiting right after I applied the liquid flea control to her back. Thus, my research began.

The attachment gives you the ingredients to a few popular flea/tick control topical's. Use the table to identify the specific ingredient that is used in a given brand, i.e. Frontline, Advantage, etc. and look at the side effects that are listed.

Funny thing is that none of these side effects are listed on the packaging for Frontline Plus. I don't have access to the other brands packaging so I cannot comment on their warning label. Also I find it interesting that many of the brands don't tell you what the “inert” ingredients are.

Frontline does list its “inert” ingredients and their side effects include birth defects, cancer producing, neurotoxic and damage to organs. No wonder some of these other brands don't list the inert ingredients. After having completed my research I have decided that I will never use any type of chemical flea/tick control on my pets. Because of the information that I obtained from your web site I will use a “natural” approach to flea control in the future. I have never recommended any of these products due to the dangers of using neurotoxic chemicals on animals. My concern is that these chemicals cause acute and chronic disease to my friends the animals. My other concern is that the caregivers and their children are being exposed to these chemicals by touching and hugging them 24/7. There are no safety studies on the long-term effect of any of these chemicals on children.

Any product that tells you to wear gloves, do not get it on your skin and then put on your pet once a month should be warning enough that it is dangerous to be around. These chemicals can cause seizures, liver,kidney, thyroid, spleen and adrenal disease weakness of muscles, labored breathing, loss of coordination, increased miscarriages, birth defects, heart and brain disease as well.

There are no studies on long-term use or the levels of these chemicals in the body. My advice is to make sure your pets do not have these chemicals on them and if they do, wash the product off immediately and never use it again. Make sure your children's doctors are aware of their exposure to these chemicals if they are having any acute or chronic conditions that relate to these chemicals. Please pay this forward and save a life.
