What has Medicine Man discovered about how to stop and or prevent a dog fight?
Before I share what I discovered over 40 years ago about how I found a way to stop dog fights that is 100% effective, I want to share the story that led up to my discovery many moons ago.
I graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary Medical School in May of 1973, and got my first job in San Diego, California. The practice was very busy and my learning curve was very rapid and exciting. I always loved surgery and was allowed to do as much surgery as I wanted. Surgery to me was so rewarding and challenging. I would be brought animals in who had been hit by cars, trucks, fallen off cliffs, wounded, injured in dog fights, etc. I did everything from eye surgery, heart surgery, broken bones, lacerations, internal surgery, thoracic surgery, etc.
The most common situation was that of injuries incurred in dog fights or cat fights. Often times the caregiver was also injured trying to stop the fights. I felt sad for the caregiver and the animal but I always did my best to do the best surgery I could to help the animal heal. Over a period of years I suggested all the usual recommendations I had been taught in veterinary school and from other veterinarians but none of them were very effective in stopping or breaking up dog fights..
One day a new client came in with three Huskies that had been fighting. She told me she had 12 sled dogs….Say what? … We are talking sunny San Diego where it NEVER snows. As it turned out she had a team of sled dogs that she kept in San Diego and trained them with a sled with wheels. In the winter she would take them north to do their thing in the snow.
Long story short, I learned that these guys are very friendly but they like to fight with each other if they are not separated by cages or chains. My client liked to keep them in a large enclosure so they could move around and be free so we had fights break out from time to time and I had to put them back together. After one of these altercations I had an idea pop into my head and so I shared it with her and told her to let me know if it worked.
Weeks and months went by and I did not hear back from her until one day she came into my office to pick up some supplements. She told my assistant she wanted to speak with me in private.. When I walked into the room she was smiling and gave me a big hug and a BIG thank you for helping her dogs.
She told me she went out and got what I had her buy and kept it on the side of the pen where she could get to it easily should a fight break out. Sure enough the day came and in a nanosecond the dogs were in a brawl. She reached for the device and used it immediately. The six dogs in the brawl ran to the four corners of the pen and stayed there until she could get them into separate pens. As it turned out, after that first fight and using my idea, when the dogs even started to act like they were going to fight, she would just reach for the device and they would cower. She was elated that she had not had to bring her dogs back into see me to repair their fight wounds and that my idea had worked.
That was over 40 years ago and since then I have told many clients this story. I had them do the same thing. I suggest they carry it with them on walks, just in case a dog tries to attack their dog or keep it handy at home if they have multiple dogs and they have a tendency to fight.
NOW for the $10,000,000.00 QUESTION. What is it ????
Drum roll please….It is a BOAT AIRHORN 🙂 🙂 . I have a picture of the one I have been using but any will do. All you have to do is get in close and blast them with the sound. If they are approaching you or your dog, do the same, and they will NEVER attack you. Every dog fight a client has used this with has been 100% successful in stopping the fight or attack.
It is so simple and effective. I have also had clients tell me they have used them for Coyotes when they have been approached by them when walking in the hills around San Diego. My motto is always, “To do no harm and prevent suffering.” This will do just that for you and your Canine friend
